I have a project coming up in the general Atlanta area just in time for the IMSA race next weekend. I’d be at the race by myself, which is pretty lame. Do I go? Or just do a day trip to Atlanta and go home because I’m poor anyway.

I lived in Indiana for two years, and never went to the 500. I had no one to go with, but still regret never going. That's the Indy500, not an imsa race, but that's me.

I say go. When I went to Road America for the IndyCar race last month , there were certain ly many (most) people who were not staying socially distant or wearing masks.  That said, it was certainly possible to keep plenty of space to yourself.  Bring your own food and drink, and the only thing you need to go near other people for is to use the bathroom.

I went to the Indy road course by myself last year but that was when it was still safe to meet people and hang out with strangers, so I was by myself for all of fifteen minutes.

I don’t go to races a lot, but if you’re there then why not? I went to a dragstrip once by myself, didn’t know much about drag racing at all, but still had a hoot watching the cars go vroom.

being at the race yourself isn’t lame

There are other reasons you might not want to go, though.

Are they actually allowing spectators? Georgia is known for fucking up the pandemic shit even by lame US standards

It’s a six hour race and it’s supposed to rain. I enjoy racing but if it ends up red flagged and I’m just sitting there...

Yeah, I don’t mind going alone when strangers aren’t carrying the plague

Yep, tickets are  for sale.

I always go to races alone because I like to be there from start to finish, take pictures and walk around most of the day. Finding someone that can do that without complaining is very hard.

Also I would go just because so many events have been cancelled this year. I would be desperate to go to just about anything car related right now.

Day trip to Atlanta then go home (especially before the race ends -- because traffic ). Your health and the fact that you have a job is way more important.

If you know you  want to see the race, I say go. If you’re ambivalent, maybe don’t spend the money. But don’t let being alone hinder you. Besides, you know we’re right there with you at your finger tips.

Sports car races are my favorite to watch in person. If I could I would.

Which Oppos live in the Atlanta area ? Perhaps someone would be willing to go to a race with you.

Road Atlanta is a sweet venue, and like most things, I went there by myself for the Mitty and had a blast. I’d say do it, keep your distance, have a way to hear  IMSA Radio, and bring your own snacks/beers. It’ll still be fun.

I used to travel a lot on business, back when I was young. You should absolutely go for it.

I did a lot of stuff by myself while traveling. Is it as much fun as doing it with friends ? Nope But it’s way better than sitting in the hotel or even being back home doing nothing.

You might even meet some cool people and have an awesome time. Though I wouldn’t blame you for maybe avoiding that and keeping your distance.

What you’ll probably end up doing is focusing more on the race than you would with friends, because you’re not chatting.  That can be a good thing!

Im probably a bad advice person but if I’ m in a strange city for work I tend not to do any activity that I can’t enjoy by myself.

Movie, museum, etc. Yes

Sportball game, race, etc. No.

I’ve had the same guy sitting by himself behind me for the last decade or so.
